Originally from Oldham, Lancashire, I studied at Rochdale College of Art and then North Staffs Polytechnic for a BA hons degree in surface pattern. After leaving college in the early eighties I worked professionally as a designer, illustrator for major greetings card and ceramic manufacturers. My Christmas ranges of cards, wrapping paper, gift tag, stationery and mug designs sold in supermarkets such as Sainsburys, gift catalogues such as Webb Ivory and high street retailers WH Smiths with my work featuring in their seasonal full page adverts in magazines such as Good Housekeeping and Radio times.
Throughout this period I continued to develop my own painting and started teaching local adult education classes in watercolours as I became disillusioned with drawing snow scenes for Christmas cards in a July heatwave.

I’ve always drawn and painted at every opportunity and I always carry a camera, all my work is inspired and based on my own photographs and vivid memories. Photo’s from Mediterranean holidays and the drama of the changing seasons at home have become favourite subjects for my work. I specialise in watercolours because over the years I’ve tried so many materials and techniques but nothing comes close to them in creating the effects I need. I’m excited by the clean, bright and transparent colours ideal for layering to create foliage, shadows, textures and sense of bright sunshine, all essential elements of my paintings.

I exhibited for several years with the British Watercolour Society in Ilkley and in local galleries such as the Djanogly and the Bottle Kiln, more recently I’ve been a regular exhibitor at the Patchings Art Convention.

I enjoy teaching, the cut backs in non vocational adult education classes led me to take the decision some years ago to set up several of my own weekly local art groups in the Nottingham area where I’ve lived now for over twenty years. I combine teaching these with residential courses, themed workshops for art societies at their meeting places and my own programme of Saturday workshops throughout the year.
